Propranolol HCl belongs to a special class of medications known as beta-blockers. Beta-blockers block a hormone in the body that can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Used mainly for treatment of cardiovascular disease, it is one of the most widely spread medications that help to relieve heart ache and high blood pressure. But Propranolol features a general sedative effect on the nerve system, and can be used even as an anti-anxiety drug. There is a brand name formulation of Propranolol called Inderal. However, Mylan Pharmaceuticals manufactures a generic version of the medication in form of pills and XR capsules.
